Western Winds from the Kikūan Collection: Exoticism in Early Modern Japanese Paintings

Itabashi Art Museum
Until Jun 16
The Itabashi Art Museum has the Kikuan Collection, which features yoga paintings utilizing Western painting techniques in Japanese art. In 2004, the museum hosted the "History of Japanese Yoga Painting Exhibition," showcasing these works from the Momoyama period to the early Meiji era. The Kikuan Collection includes a wide range of pieces, from early modern Western-style genre paintings and Akita Ran-ga to masterpieces by Kokan Shiba, as well as more expansive and populist works. Additionally, the realistic painting style brought to Japan via China also had deep connections with Western-style expressions.

This exhibition will display a selection of carefully curated works from the Kikuan Collection, including previously unreleased pieces. The exhibition aims to explore the charm of yoga painting, which injected a fresh breeze into early modern painting and pioneered unprecedented expressions.
