Who Forms Archaeological Sitesー in What Manner?

Keio Museum Commons
Finished
What are ‘archaeological sites’? Generally, it is a place where traces of people’s activities from the historical past exist. Most of the traces are laid underground. Therefore, excavation is necessary to reveal the contents of ‘archaeological sites’.
When Keio University built the Keio Museum Commons (KeMCo), it carried out excavations to preserve the records and artifacts for the future before inevitable destruction during the building work. As a result of this excavation, various traces from the Jomon to the Edo period were found, leading to new findings.
This, however, does not mean that all traces in the area were unearthed. For example, Traces of natural phenomena and the modern period were not covered. Excavation is, in fact, an act of selecting traces, which constructs the ‘archaeological sites’ and the ‘history’ told there.
This exhibition highlights the results of what was selected and non-selected. Dismantling the framework which constructs ‘archaeological sites’ would be an excellent opportunity for participants to question the status of ‘archaeological sites’ and ‘history’.
