Q-Ei
Q-Ei (Hideo Sugita 1911-1960) was a multi-faceted artist active in a wide range of artistic fields, including oil painting, copperplate engraving, lithography, and photography, as well as photo-drawing (a photographic technique in which the subject is placed directly on photographic paper and exposed to light), which was an avant-garde form of artistic expression. In 1951, Eikyu, together with Shigeru Izumi, Yoshio Hayakawa, and others, formed the Democrat Artists Association, a free artists' group that advocated overthrowing the framework of public exhibitions, and had a major impact on Japanese art history.

This exhibition focuses on the lithographs that Q-Ei produced intensively between 1956 and 1957, and reaffirms the greatness of the artist as a pioneer of the avant-garde art that ushered in a new postwar era.
