Over forty Fine Art students and graduates from the BA, MFA and PHD programmes at Newcastle University present their artwork at Art Spot Korin, Kyoto – in return students from the Kansai region of Japan show their work in the Ex-Libris Gallery of Newcastle University’s Fine Art department.
At Art Spot Korin each Newcastle student will exhibit two pieces of work: one made for the exhibition and a second made in collaboration with Professor Chris Jones exploring aspects of call and response and the collaborative process. The title of the exhibition reflects the duality of creative practice – the sense of both independence and working in dialogue with others: curators, supporters, fellow artists and the audience.
With & Without You refects the diversity of creative practice at Newcastle University – it includes examples of painting, sculpture, printmaking, time-based media and many kinds of hybrid practice. Thematically the work explores a spectrum of interests reflective of concerns with the contemporary condition: identity, gender, ecology, narrative, value, materiality…
