Artists

Inuki Tachihara
Ininuki Tachihara (1951-2015), the only woodblock print artist to revive Edo period ukiyo-e in the modern era, is highly acclaimed both in Japan and abroad for his achievements. As a result of his research on paints and tools used in the Edo period, he succeeded in elucidating traditional Japanese ukiyo-e not only technically but also academically. In recognition of his achievements, in December 2019, a total of 12 ukiyo-e works (9 Ukiyo-e reprints and 3 original creations) were permanently preserved at the British Museum in the United Kingdom. This exhibition is a rare opportunity to showcase these 12 works from the British Museum collection, as well as 10 other representative works of Inuki Tachihara.

Taking advantage of the exhibition space at World Heritage Site Ninna-ji Temple, the entire exhibition space will be used as an installation that embodies the world view of Inuki Tachihara's creative activities, recreating the atmosphere of his studio, the starting point for the creation of these masterpieces over his 40-year career.
