Yan Lei
Chinese artist Yan Lei's new art project "The Face-Slap Theory" will be exhibited for the first time at the ARTiX³ art space in Tokyo, Japan. The curator of this project is Su Wei, a scholar who focuses on the study of contemporary art history in China. The exhibition will explore how art becomes a medium that influences and is influenced when politics and economics intersect with artistic creation, and how artists and viewers engage in dialogue.

Yan Lei explores the rules of power games and their illusions and psychological tendencies in an environment where conservatism is spreading and interregional conflicts are constantly erupting. However, he is not entirely critical. He created the head of a female model, which is filled with the atmosphere of the urban middle class, wearing a sheet mask printed with the words "Plaza Accord," the countries that signed it, and the date of signing, using 3D printing.

The exhibition also includes life-size sheet masks printed with the original text of the "Plaza Accord." Political alliances and conflicts between nations, especially across borders, in the 20th century continue to reverberate today. While widely used as a political tool, it has not been able to resolve today's regional and ethnic conflicts and accurately explain its influence. For some instigators, it is a difficult self-proving contradiction. This expressionless model's head is associated with the "Plaza Accord" and the so-called "face-slap theory" as it protrudes from geopolitical complexes. We can only find a human-centered critical perspective through the more classical idealistic expression of "reality-transcendence" created by the artist. Refining it into something poetic may arise from discrepancies and reversals in reality or from choices made in situations and positions deeply involved in reality.
