One of the best-known palaces in the world, the Palace of Versailles was built in 1682 by then-King Louis XIV and served as his residence until the outbreak of the French Revolution under Louis XVI, becoming a stage for elegant courtly culture. For four centuries, it has occupied a unique place in history and in people's imagination, and continues to inspire artists, creators, and many others.

Since 2022, Yasumichi Morita has frequently visited the Palace of Versailles, capturing in black-and-white photographs the baroque architectural masterpieces filled with gold and glittering light, focusing on the sunlight that brings different nuances to each of the four seasons. This exhibition introduces approximately 100 images of the Palace of Versailles, which are captured with a unique aesthetic eye, through various contrasts of light and shadow, front and back, above and below ground, and so on.

Photographed almost exclusively in natural light, except for midnight, the works seem to capture the work of human beings as "shadows" reflected in the ever-changing light. Morita, who titled this exhibition "In Praise of Shadows" after Junichiro Tanizaki's essay of the same title, states, "There is no more appropriate space than the Palace of Versailles to capture the 'light and shade' of human beings, which remain unchanged throughout the ages."
