Yoko Yamamoto
Copperplate artist Yoko Yamamoto has established a captivating world of unique copperplate prints, showcasing a deep understanding of literature, philosophy, and art, along with thematic and motif selections enriched with narrative elements. She is known for her outstanding composition skills, lively and elegant use of colors, and the ability to freely traverse genres by integrating music and poetry into her paintings. Over the years, she has contributed to the design and illustration of numerous books, earning recognition with awards such as the Kyoto Art and Culture Award in 2011 and the Kyoto City Cultural Merit Award in 2013.

Kaigado Gallery has been organizing Yoko Yamamoto's solo exhibitions since 2010. The 14th edition, titled "Animals in the Mirror Country," features a central focus on works depicting animals, including the newly created series "Alice in the Mirror Country," with motifs such as the horse portrayed as the Chess Knight.

Triggered by her illustration work for the 1994 book "Alice in Wonderland," Yoko Yamamoto has continuously produced works based on Lewis Carroll's Alice series. In 2023, she embarked on a new series based on the sequel to "Alice in Wonderland," namely "Through the Looking-Glass." This Wonderland is said to be appreciated only by those who understand the rules of chess. Delving into the game of chess, Yamamoto deciphered and incorporated various "mysteries" found within the book into her artwork. The pieces within her interpretation of "Alice's World" immerse the viewer in a unique world of imagination.

Additionally, the exhibition will feature works centered around illustrations created for the Yomiuri Shimbun evening edition "Tashinami." Visitors can enjoy a display of vibrant and cheerful works carefully selected by Yoko Yamamoto for this special exhibition within the classic ambiance of the Imperial Hotel.
