Yokohama Ukiyo-e

Kawasaki Ukiyo-e Gallery Saito Fumio Collection
Finished
Yokohama Ukiyo-e" are ukiyo-e prints featuring Yokohama, which has experienced rapid development as an international trading port since its opening in 1859.

The threat of the black ships, the rapidly changing cityscape, the appearance of the foreigners who came to Japan, the lifestyle and customs... Ukiyoe artists in Edo (Tokyo) were the first to take notice of new and novel things that had never been seen before. To respond to the interest of the masses, they competed to publish ukiyo-e featuring the "new city of Yokohama.”

This exhibition offers a rich and varied selection of ukiyo-e works that show the formation process of the exotic city of Yokohama and the surprise and admiration of Japanese people who were exposed to foreigners and foreign culture for the first time.
