Kanjiro Kawai
This exhibition showcases work by Kanjiro Kawai (1890-1966) and other ceramic artists in his lineage from the collection of Yoshifusa Kagizen.
Kawai built his house and studio in Gojozaka, Kyoto in 1920, where the Kawai Kujiro Memorial Museum now stands. The Yoshifusa Kagizen shop, which has long been located in the Gion district of Kyoto, a popular gathering place for writers and artists, has many works by artists who participated in the Mingei movement, such as Tomojiro and Tatsuaki Kuroda (1904-1982), indicating their close friendship at that time.
This exhibition focuses on the works of Kawai and his adopted son, Hiroji (1919-1993), in Period I, and his nephew, Takeichi (1908-1989), and his son, Toru (1941-2021), in Period II.
