GALLERY MoMo Projects / Roppongi is pleased to present an exhibition of pastel works by Yosuke Kobashi from Friday, September 27 to Saturday, October 12.

Born in Nara Prefecture in 1980, Kobashi graduated from Osaka University of Arts in 2003. In 2004, he exhibited at the Kobe Art Annual, and in 2006, he held a solo exhibition at the Mito Art Tower's "Criterium" while also being recommended for the VOCA exhibition. His free and expansive compositions and rich sense of color have garnered attention. In 2014, he participated in the group exhibition "Nostalgia & Fantasy: Imagination and its Origins in Contemporary Art" at the National Museum of Art, Osaka. Additionally, the two-person exhibition "Tobimasu," which was held at our gallery in 2019 in collaboration with Kawashima, started at a building in Atami and traveled to venues such as Utrecht (Tokyo) and Café Le Pleure (Osaka). His book "Flowers, Dolphins, and Unicorns," published by the book label *piyo piyo press* founded by Kotori Kawashima in 2021, has been accompanied by exhibitions held across Japan in various spaces, receiving high acclaim. His works are part of the Ryutaro Takahashi Collection and are also housed in the National Museum of Art, Osaka.

This exhibition will focus on a series of works created by Kobashi using pastels. One of the works, *Me ni Me ni Me ni Shi*, takes its title from the lyrics of Chara's song "Setsunai Mono" and has an English title, *Many Many Many Sea*. Inspired by the view of the sea from a hill near Kobashi’s new home, the work, although it does not depict the sea, was driven by the feeling that "the sea seen from the hill felt perfect." This sensation, along with the idea that by the time he paints the experience, the original feeling might have faded, influenced the naming of the piece. Another series, *Hello Body*, came from Kobashi’s desire to "take portraits by the sea, bathed in bright sunlight, and paint them." Initially, photographs of nude figures taken at the seaside for his work were perceived as introspective and closed, leading Kobashi to create *Hello Body* as a representation of "open, bright, and light-hearted nudity." The nude portraits posed in nature exude an atmosphere of openness and confidence. Kobashi’s “100 Vases* was presented as one work consisting of 100 different pots at the National Museum of Art, Osaka. While limited the motif of the ”Vases," each is expressed with Kobashi's free imagination and bold use of color. This exhibition will display 68 of the 100 Vases. Through the diverse pastel works of Yosuke Kobashi, we hope you will enjoy his colorful, liberating expressions filled with freedom and openness.
