Yozo Hamaguchi
Gallery Soumei-do is pleased to present an exhibition of works by Yozo Hamaguchi.
Hamaguchi developed the color mezzotint technique, in which colored plates are layered on top of each other in the mezzotint technique known as the black technique. He has won numerous awards at international art exhibitions, including the Grand Prize in the International Printmaking Department at the 1957 Sao Paulo Biennial. That made him widely known as one of the world's leading copperplate print artists.
Hamaguchi often used small fruits such as cherries, grapes, and walnuts, as well as small lives such as shellfish and butterflies, as motifs for his works, and preferred to use a technique of making small objects stand out by composing the picture with a wide space. As a result, the objects seem to emerge from the jet-black screen as if they were luminous. The motifs from the closed black space present us with the mystery of the space and give us a sense of tremendous time.
