Yozo Hamaguchi + Tetsuro Sawada Exhibition

Kichijoji Art Museum
Finished

Artists

Yozo Hamaguchi, Tetsuro Sawada
Yozo Hamaguchi (1909-2000) was self-taught in mezzotint, which produces infinite gradations from black to white, and later developed it into color mezzotint by printing four overlapping plates of red, blue, yellow, and black. His familiar still lifes such as butterflies and cherries, which emerge with a faint glow in the darkness where silence reigns, are deeply emotional and have been highly acclaimed internationally.

In addition to Hamaguchi's works, this exhibition introduces silkscreen works by Tetsuro Sawada (1935-1998). His eponymous “Sky Scape" silkscreen was inspired by the scenery he saw from airplane windows during a trip to the United States, Mexico, and South America in 1966. The horizon line, created by layers of geometrically drawn parallel lines and vivid gradations, draws the viewer in and transports him or her to a place beyond the sky that each of us has in mind.
