Yu Hirayama
Yu Hirayama was born in Osaka in 1994. After graduating from Kyoto University of the Arts (now Kyoto City University of Arts) in 2018, he is currently based in Osaka, where he continues his artistic practice. His work, depicting plants and figures behind patterned frosted glass that was used for building fixtures in the Showa era, has gained attention in solo and group exhibitions as well as art fairs, establishing him as a promising young artist.
The motifs, which do not form clear images against the nostalgic relief of retro glass, evoke strong imagination beyond the glass and resonate with viewers' memories, expanding vivid and fresh imagery. Hirayama, inspired by experiences where the image of a "presence in the background" seemed to change through the power of imagination, or where the imagined image appeared to exist in reality, began using the image seen through frosted glass as a motif to reproduce that feeling.
In this exhibition, under the theme of "looking through windows," Hirayama depicts familiar landscapes. Visiting Kyoto, where he spent his student days, for the occasion of this exhibition, Hirayama recalls various memories as he strolls along the familiar Kamogawa River. He says that the scenery he is looking at feels very extraordinary, overflowing with memories. The scenery that people see can change from insignificant to special depending on changes in their environment and mood. Hiyama's new work offers such discoveries and insights.
