Yuka Hotta
This summer, when the sky suddenly seemed to darken, a rumbling sound often began to emanate from thick clouds. When I looked at the lightning falling through the clouds, it was not sharp and jagged but a thin line like the root of a limp sweet potato, and I reconfirmed that it was like this. The thick lines look weak when viewed as a still image, but in reality, they are formed by enormous force pushing through and colliding with the "air" through which they are supposed to be unable to pass. The "air," which we do not usually see or become aware of, is brought to life by the lightning, which is also shaped to look like lightning.

Looking at the changes in Hotta's paintings from the cartoon-like motifs of her early years to the present, it appears that he does not select elements from the original motifs and abstract them, but rather she uses a method similar to that of sculpture, in which she scrapes away the motifs and leaves the forms. This is not an obvious way of using his own physicality to paint pictures but is, in fact, a way of creating "air," which is the ground of the figure and the ground that forms the body.

The title of this exhibition, "Kara desu," can be read to mean two things: "~ (kara)," indicating the beginning, and "empty (kara-po). Both evoke "nothingness" as a state of zero. White, which Hotta uses in his drawings, seems to be a material that symbolizes such "nothingness. Perhaps the artist shows us how we can control our own bodies when we try to obtain the elusive existence in this space.
