Yuka Nishihisamatsu + Kei Kawai Exhibition

Artists

Yuka Nishihisamatsu, Kei Kawai
Ceramist Yuka Nishikumatsu and lacquer artist Kei Kawai, both graduates of Kyoto City University of Arts Graduate School, are currently based in Kyoto, where they continue their artistic endeavors.

Nishikumatsu reconstructs and reinterprets symbolic forms and decorations with historical and cultural backgrounds using clay. She perceives a sense of mystery in the phenomena that occur during firing in the kiln, such as the distortion of clay and chemical changes in glazes. Her intricate and vibrant works evoke a sense of reverence, resembling objects of prayer.

Kawai, on the other hand, explores the potential of lacquer, a substance that has supported people's lives in Japan since ancient times. Through repeated application and polishing, he achieves a unique luster on the surface, while patterns such as maki-e and raden, created using lacquer's unique decorative techniques, reveal the creator's underlying emotions and fundamental aspects.

Having shared the same academic background and possessing common traits such as beautiful embellishments in their works and a prayer-like sense in their creative activities, these two artists feel a connection with each other. Prompted by Nishikumatsu's invitation, they have collaborated to realize this joint exhibition. In addition to showcasing their individual works, the exhibition also features special collaboration pieces created specifically for this event. The exhibition invites viewers to discover new perspectives as the distinct artistic worlds of each artist occasionally intersect.
