A Christmas tree will be exhibited at Koichi Yamamura Gallery as part of Yuki Matsueda's solo exhibition "Departures." Matsueda creates works that embody the principles of color, shape, and texture as if they were "paintings." In this stunning installation, these works are transformed into "ornaments," unveiling a new series.
His works respond to uncertainties both internally and externally, expressing bright colors and limitless, non-objective objects in three-dimensional form. Visually emphasizing positive proposals, Matsueda's works seem to suggest the reshaping of the brain towards a more optimistic perspective as one of their driving forces. Features such as protruding emergency exits and hanging eggs exude a more abstract positivity.
In the exhibited pieces, the spikes may initially appear chaotic, conflicting, and somewhat bewildering, but they eventually evoke a sense of calm and encouragement. These vertical works create space beyond the resin board (or PET board). The composition, multi-colored textures, and spatial thickness create a filled abstract scene.
While they may seem flat at first glance, the carefully considered composition allows the viewer to settle into the protrusions. The tension between the process of creation and the process of appreciation gives the artworks an overwhelming presence. They are complex, gesture-like, soft, tactile, beautiful, and simultaneously unsettling. It can be said that they become a language of both painting and sculpture on complex and multiple levels.
