Yuki Takagi
Yuki Takagi was born in Fukushima in 1994. After graduating from the Department of Painting, majoring in Oil Painting, at Tokyo University of the Arts in 2021, she completed her Master's degree at the Graduate School of Fine Arts, Tokyo University of the Arts, in March 2024. She is currently based in Tokyo, where she continues her creative activities.

Takagi receives images of indoor scenes actually inhabited by the photographer, taken by acquaintances or close friends, and creates models based on these scenes. She then carefully photographs these models and uses the captured images as the basis for her oil paintings. This multi-step process introduces several layers of distortion, akin to a game of telephone, ultimately imparting both realistic and virtual aspects to her work. Her paintings possess a distinctive atmosphere, as if someone had just been present, making viewers perceive an "existence" within the absence, evoking a mysterious feeling akin to fear.

The title of this exhibition, "Nightlight," represents a presence that governs light and shadow in a somewhat lonely room illuminated by a faint glow. Takagi, who enjoys horror films, has repeatedly attempted to evoke the underlying unease and unstable emotions present in everyday scenes through her works. Additionally, her series featuring circular and elliptical canvases, which she started last year, gives viewers a sense of guilt, as if peering through a peephole, adding another layer of dark emotion.

This exhibition will feature a large-scale work (size 150) that was presented at her graduate exhibition, along with approximately seven new works.
