Yukio Nakagawa
This exhibition features glasswork by Yukio Nakagawa (1918-2012), a renowned Japanese avant-garde ikebana artist. Born in Marugame City, Kagawa Prefecture, Nakagawa began studying ikebana in 1941 under the guidance of his aunt, who was affiliated with the Ikenobo school. After World War II, his work gained public attention when it was featured in "Ikebana Art," recommended by the garden designer Mirei Shigemori. However, after a conflict with the headmaster over his piece "Blues," which featured a whole cabbage arranged as a floral work, he left the school in 1951. From then on, Nakagawa pursued his unique floral expressions independently, without affiliating with any school or taking on disciples. One of his most famous works, "Hanabozu" (1973), involved packing 900 red carnations into a glass container and placing it upside down, allowing the bright red flower juice to seep into white washi paper—a groundbreaking expression that challenged traditional concepts of ikebana and earned him high acclaim.

This exhibition will showcase 28 glass works created in May 2002 at the Fujikawa Glass Studio in Yamanashi Prefecture under Nakagawa's supervision and produced by glass artist Yoshihiko Takahashi. Nakagawa had been incorporating glass into his works from an early stage, not merely as a vessel for arranging flowers, but as an equal material that resonates with the flowers to create a harmonious ikebana expression.
