Yumeji Takehisa
From the Meiji period onward, among the cultural elements introduced by the civilization's opening to the outside world were plays, operas, ballets, and other performing arts written by Shakespeare and other foreign authors. Like kabuki, ningyo joruri (puppet theater), and other traditional Japanese performing arts, they were loved by the masses as they transformed with the times.

Takehisa Yumeji (1884-1934), a leading multi-artist of the Taisho era, loved the performing arts and expressed in his works the charm of traditional Japanese performing arts with an Edo-style atmosphere and stages of exotic origin, and even worked on stage scenery. In addition to the splendor of the stage, Yumeji also captured scenes of backstage, rehearsals, and audience members in his paintings, which will be on display at the museum.

Also on view for the first time is the Yumeji Collection, which was donated to the museum by Yuji Makiguchi (1936-2021), a director of period TV dramas and movies, and which shows Yumeji's influence on the present day.
