Yumiko Utsu
Yumiko Utsu is a photographer born and living in Tokyo. Her surrealistic set-up works, which are composed of animals, insects, plants, people, objects, and figures combined with her own collection of paintings, fabrics, and illustrated books, were highly acclaimed and won the Grand Prix at the 26th Hitotsubo Exhibition (2006). After the birth of her children, she has been energetically presenting her works both in Japan and abroad, making time for her work despite the time and physical constraints. This year, she was selected for the group exhibition "Jump before you look" (October 27, 2023, to January 21, 2024) at the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography, and to commemorate this selection, she released a photo book entitled "Wunderkammer (Room of Wonder)" (published by Fugensha), The momentum of Utsu's activities is only increasing.
This exhibition will feature a series of photographs of Utsu, not as a photographer but as an ordinary mother, taken by her children, snapshots of the downtown shopping district where she lives, a photograph of herself wearing her late father's shirt, photographs taken during a residency in Taiwan with her children, Polaroids from her film production days, and works from her photo book "Wunderkammer." The exhibition will be composed as if the venue itself were a "room of wonders," with works from the photo book "Wunderkammer.
How does Yumiko Utsu go about her daily life, what inspires her, how does she find the gaps in her work, and how does she continue to exhibit her work so energetically? We hope that this exhibition will give viewers a sense of Utsu Yumiko as she struggles between her daily life and her artwork.
