Yusuke Muraki
Medel Gallery Shu is pleased to present Three Elements, a solo exhibition by Yusuke Muraki, on view from May 23 to June 4, 2024. This marks Muraki’s first solo exhibition at the gallery.
Muraki explores a profound sense of immersion in something greater than human existence—an overwhelming encounter with nature—through abstract painting. His works reveal a rhythmic coexistence of order and chaos inherent in the natural world. Repeated patterns evoke the cycles of life and the rhythms of the body, resonating with the viewer on a physical level.
The living forces within Muraki’s paintings invite us to reflect on our connection with the environment and reconsider how we live within it. They seem to encourage us to look down at our feet and reconnect with the ground we stand on.
The exhibition’s title, Three Elements, refers to Yin, Yang, and the “balance” that connects the two. Muraki visualizes this concept by creating works in black and white, layering opposing colors onto each canvas. These paintings serve as “gates” that link two worlds—natural and human—and offer inspiration for coexisting with the earth.
In May 2024, Muraki moved to Niseko with nothing but his tools, working as a carpenter to renovate a friend’s house while building a creative community with local residents. Stripped of material excess, he found joy and inspiration in daily life. A series of unexpected encounters eventually led to this exhibition. Though he juggled work and art through the harsh winter, he was finally able to focus on painting from mid-March onward. This exhibition is the culmination of a year of persistent pursuit.
Muraki extends heartfelt thanks to those who made this exhibition possible: Mr. Takano, who welcomed him with open arms; Green Park and Aleph Geddis, who offered space for creation; YenZo, Christian Calabro, and Oliver Vernon, who provided inspiration and joy; and his family, friends, and loved ones for their constant support.
Beyond painting, Muraki also expresses himself through DJing and other creative forms. His works radiate a grounded, powerful energy—like the earth itself—and reflect his instincts with unfiltered honesty. We invite you to experience them for yourself.
