Zahir Abid
Zahir Abid is a painter from the Cabiria region of northeastern Algeria, now living in the United States.
Raised in a poor mountainous region devastated by the War of Independence, he went to college in Algiers. When he joined a student movement demanding the return of the banned national language and the democratization of the country, he was violently repressed by the government and fled the country. He later joined the Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent, Belgium, but his life became extremely difficult, and he emigrated to the United States. There, too, he continued to struggle to survive, but he was eventually reunited with his family in his hometown of Cabiria.

When viewing his work, viewers are filled with deep thought and laughter at the same time. The aspects of human society depicted in his works evoke beautiful illusions and bitter satire, cruelty and humor, sadness and hope, evoking conflicting emotions. Abid's life path, which took him to various parts of the world in search of his homeland, human dignity, and freedom, has formed a unique view of humanity, which is reflected in his work as a distinctive style of painting.
