Taro Terasawa
As Japan faced radical changes between the end of the Edo period and the beginning of the modern era, the country's first photo studio opened in Nagasaki, as if to synchronize with this milestone in the history of Japan. People of the time were afraid of being photographed, believing that it would take away their souls. What were they scared of? Did they fear that their own reflections would be captured in the photographs and not be allowed to move on with them? Is it because photographs reminded them of the fact that they were not capable of seeing their own images directly? What, then, could be taken away through the act of photographing?

Before long, with their souls intact, people began to have their photographs taken at turning points in their lives, in an attempt to immortalize their marriages, the growth of their children, their affection for their parents, and the ravages of war. Over time, having professional photos taken at photo studios became established as a ceremonial element of people's everyday lives. People today all have cameras in hand and take photos on a daily basis. Nevertheless, they still prefer their portraits to be taken by professionals not only because of its ceremonial significance but also, and rather, because of the pleasurable sensation that the act affords, and their hopes of possessing images that "contain" their souls.

Photos taken at Terasawa Photo Studio are filled with vitality and a sense of presence. Releasing the shutter in less than 2 seconds, Terasawa captures happy moments in the lives of his sitters that seem to last forever, the moments that link the present to an even better future. -Yozo Kiri
