Allegra Pacheco
Allegra Pacheco is an internationally active artist working primarily in photography and drawing through which she creates a sense of strange encounter in the everyday spaces of the city. In this exhibition she presents the Japanese version of “The Boobs” project, first initiated in Costa Rica in 2012.

Breasts are a symbol of women and while they have a sexual interpretation they are also that which a new born baby first puts its mouth to as the spring of life. Pacheco stuffs these breasts with sanitary napkins, nappies and other items associated with female reproduction, creating plentiful boobs which seem to express the artists own sympathy with women. Her exhibition in Costa Rica drew attention to the hardships of women as mothers, wives and workers and while the condition in Japan is different, it is also a country grappling with many issues with concern the position of women.

The nomadic Pacheco, who has moved across New York, London and Tokyo take “The Boobs in Japan” as an opportunity to reflect upon the issues facing women in Japan and present a perspective on Japanese gender from a different point of view.
