Happiness on the Horizon: The Copperplate Prints of Yozo Hamaguchi

Musee Hamaguchi Yozo / Yamasa Collection
Finished
Yozo Hamaguchi (1909–2000) was a major figure in 20th century copperplate printmaking. After WWII, he traveled to Paris and developed the color mezzotint method of copperplate engraving around 1955. His artworks created with this method received numerous international awards. He is listed in Encyclopedia Britannica as the artist who developed color mezzotint.
Hamaguchi’s works depict faint light emanating from soft blackness with calm horizons and gentle warmth. The blacks of his mezzotints come in gradations, with overlapping yellows, reds, and blues giving the works rich nuance. This exhibition for the 111th anniversary of Hamaguchi’s birth features around 50 pieces, including oil paintings and newly found documents. Feast your eyes on this banquet of bottomless depth and poetic color.
