Tetsuya Umeda
“in Beppu” is an arts festival inviting one internationally active artist or artist group to Beppu for the realization and exhibition of a piece utilizing the city’s regional characteristics. For this year, the 5th annual “in Beppu,” the invited contemporary artist is Tetsuya Umeda, who is active in crossing various fields such as music, art, and performing arts.

The title of this exhibition is “Zero-Tai”. To quote Umeda himself, “Zero O” indicates a “hole” or literally a “count zero” before the origin of things. “Zero-Tai” offers an experience to the audience through visits to various places in Beppu with the guide of a map and voice-overs heard from a radio terminal. These touring spots include geographical features and spaces unique to Beppu and places that are normally off limits. In addition, a movie shot on those locations is shown at the historical movie theater Beppu Bluebird Theater. Moreover, this exhibition continuously changes, with some works appearing on the official website. A book by the same title as the exhibition will be published.
