More than 100 years have passed since Alfred Stieglitz, the father of modern photography, dedicated himself to establishing photography as an art form. How has photography developed, been seen, and been discussed over time?

This exhibition focuses on the Kyoto National Museum of Modern Art’s extensive photography collection, which was one of the first major photography collections established in Japanese museums. It tracks the evolution of diverse photographic expressions from the late 19th century to the present, featuring works by 68 artists and over 180 pieces.

The core of the exhibition is the "Gilbert Collection," collected by American photography collectors Arnold and Tammi Gilbert. Using this collection, which includes high-quality prints by representative photographers from various eras, the exhibition will unravel the many stories that photography has woven. By engaging with printed and materialized photographs, visitors will appreciate the depth of "photography" as it has become a familiar presence with the spread of digital technology.
