Last year was the 100th anniversary of the birth of Kiyoshi Yamashita, known as a "wandering genius.” His tumultuous life up until his death at the age of 49 was often featured in movies and TV dramas, and he was well-liked not only by art fans but also by a wide range of people. Perhaps the reason why his works are still loved by so many people after so many years is because they remind viewers of the simple and nostalgic Japanese landscape that captures their hearts and minds.
This exhibition will present the artist Kiyoshi Yamashita's worldview in five chapters, from his childhood to his mature years.
Kiyoshi Yamashita is probably one of the most prominent painters in Japan. However, most people's information is influenced by dramas and movies. In reality, he was very different from his appearance in dramas; he was a sensitive, naïve person, and meticulous. Also, even though he is so famous, surprisingly few people have actually seen his works.
For this reason, people who come into contact with Yamashita's works through exhibitions for the first time are uniformly surprised and impressed. This is because they are fascinated by the extraordinarily high degree of perfection of his works.
The purpose of this exhibition is to show the true nature of Yamashita through his works, not the way he was portrayed in dramas, and to preserve the artist Kiyoshi Yamashita for future generations.
