This exhibition commemorates the 100th anniversary of the birth of the painter Kiyoshi Yamashita, who was hailed as a "wandering genius painter," and serves as a retrospective showcasing his life, focusing on his representative pasted pictures. The exhibition will cover Yamashita's upbringing, his encounter with pasted pictures, the pasted pictures that became synonymous with him, early works, works from his school days, valuable pieces created before and after his wandering period, artworks from his first trip to Europe, his late-life endeavors in pottery painting, and pen drawings.
Yamashita is arguably the most famous painter in Japan, a fact that is beyond doubt. However, most people's information about him relies on dramas and movies. The real Yamashita was vastly different from the portrayal in dramas, being a delicate and naive person with a meticulous personality. Despite his fame, surprisingly few people have seen his works. Therefore, those who see his works for the first time at an exhibition are invariably surprised and moved. This is because they are captivated by the intricate and highly finished pasted pictures.
This exhibition aims to present the true essence of Yamashita through his works. It is not about the Yamashita depicted in dramas but about preserving the artist Kiyoshi Yamashita for future generations.
