Kiyoshi Yamashita
This exhibition celebrates the 100th anniversary of the birth of the wandering artist Kiyoshi Yamashita.

Born in Asakusa, Tokyo in 1922, Yamashita lived through the Great Kanto Earthquake of the Taisho era and the outbreak of war in the Showa era until his death at the young age of 49.

Yamashita's talent for painting blossomed when he was introduced to chigiri-e (hand-formed pictures) at an orphanage where he spent his youth. Eventually, he developed his own unique style of "pasteboard pictures." His work of landscapes attracted even more attention because of their high degree of perfection. Later, he expanded his creative activities to include oil and watercolor paintings, pen drawings with magic markers, and ceramics painting.

In addition, a 30-minute documentary film featuring Yamashita himself, in which he describes the process of creating the paintings and his own voice, will also be shown.
