Sho Ishimoto
Japanese painter Sho Ishimoto (1920-2015) is known for his sensual depictions of maiko and nude women. To commemorate the 100th anniversary of Ishimoto's birth, a large-scale retrospective exhibition will be held for the first time in Kyoto, the artist's former base of activity.

Ishimoto was born in Hamada City, Shimane Prefecture, and studied Japanese painting at the Kyoto Municipal College of Painting (now Kyoto City University of Arts). He later studied and absorbed a wide range of medieval art from Europe as well as Japan, and his passionate and realistic images of maiko (apprentice geisha) and nude women caused a stir in the expression of the human body in postwar Japanese painting.

This exhibition brings together approximately 140 works, including representative works collected from all over Japan, in addition to works never before exhibited at Sho Ishimoto's private museum, the Hamada Shiritsu Sekisho Museum, to provide an overview of his painting career that spanned 75 years from his youth. Newly discovered drawings from his studio after his death and the unfinished "Maiko" will also be on display, providing a glimpse into the life and creative roots of Ishimoto, who never sought status or fame throughout his life, but devoted himself to painting until his final moments.
