The long-selling picture book series "11 Cats" features stories about curious, greedy, and sometimes cunning cats who are somehow lovable. Since its first installment was born in 1967, with its expansive expression and humor-filled stories, it has continued to be loved by a wide range of generations from children to adults.
The author Noboru Baba (1927-2001) was born in San no He, Aomori, and from a young age, he loved to draw. After the war, he made his debut as a manga artist. He gained popularity with works like "Post-kun" and "Buutan" in children's magazines, earning him the nickname "Three Glass Pieces of the Children's Manga World" along with his close friends Osamu Tezuka and Eiichi Fukui.
Later, Baba began his career as a picture book author, publishing numerous picture books from his first work "Mountain Men of Fox Forest" to his representative work "11 Cats" series, and his final work, "Mr. Aosan of the Grape Field," which are still being passed down today. Baba's characteristic heartwarming art style, profound humor, and unique narrative style remained consistent throughout his lifetime, whether in manga or picture books.
This exhibition focuses on the popular "11 Cats" series, showcasing original picture book illustrations, manga manuscripts, sketches, and more, introducing the charm of Noboru Baba's work.
