Artists

Seiji Togo
From the 1960s to 1970s, Seiji Togo (1897-1978) traveled around the world almost every year. Although he was over 70 years old and had already established his own style, a well refined and sophisticated one, these journeys led him to produce works with an exotic mood that was different from his past works. He was particularly fascinated by the Mediterranean countries, for example, Southern Europe (Southern France, Greece, etc.) and North Africa and the Sahara Desert (Morocco, Algeria, etc.). These regions and its people became the main subjects of his later works.

From the collection of Seiji Togo Memorial Sompo Japan Museum of Art, Seiji Togo’s 53 works, which are inspired by the Mediterranean countries, will be on display. They are, mainly works from the 1960s and 1970s, including canvases, drawings and sketches drawn during his journey.
