Ikebukuro-Montparnasse: The Midday of Hideo Oguma

Artists

Hideo Oguma
The poet Hideo Oguma (1901-1940) was also an excellent painter with a distinct flair for satire. He began as an author of stories, poems, and avant-garde artworks in Hokkaido while working as a newspaper reporter. Later moving to Tokyo, he became an energetic contributor to the Proletariat Poet Society.
In Tokyo, Oguma resided in the Ikebukuro area, which was home to many young and aspiring artists at the time. This bustling city was christened “Ikebukuro-Montparnasse” in one of his poems, and Oguma himself produced many self-taught drawings and paintings under his peers’ influence.
This exhibition features Hideo Oguma’s artworks alongside the works of other painters from “Ikebukuro-Montparnasse”, introducing visitors to the lifestyles of pre-war Japanese artists.
