Mayumi Terada
Terada lives in New York. Since 2001, she has been taking pictures of interior models/designs that she makes herself. Her works displayed at this second solo exhibition at Base Gallery seem to have become more dynamic than before, as her focus shifted from indoors to outdoors.
The process of making models and having them photographed is physical and direct, just like the process of painting; however, the completed images, devoid of human presence, create some sort of tension and distance. When the viewers project their personal memories and feelings on the image, they may realize that, like those pictures, their stories are nothing but "beautifully constructed fictions"... The tranquility in her images strongly appeal to us, partly because of the uncertainty of existence they have.
