The I Within You: Selections from the Hara Museum's Permanent Collection

Hara Museum of Contemporary Art (Tokyo)
Finished

Artists

Sophie Calle, Yasumasa Morimura, Nobuyoshi Araki
The Hara Museum was originally built as a private mansion during the early part of the Showa era, and even now retains a residential quality following its rebirth as an art museum. Its history and special qualities have spurred a number of artists to look back on their own histories or to hold exhibitions composed of family portraits. This exhibition focuses on series of works that were marked by their highly effective use of the museum's special attributes, and which were acquired by the museum for its permanent collection.
Standing out among these are Sophie Calle's Exquisite Pain, Yasumasa Morimura's Rembrandt series and Nobuyoshi Araki's Sentimental Journey/Winter Journey, three ambitious works that deeply probe the act of living through the act of self-revelation.
These eloquent works by three artists work in three different ways, all of which resonate with the memory of the "home" within the Hara Museum. Each one expresses the joy and sadness in life, speaks of the frailty and strength within people, and leads us to ponder the different aspects of life.
