Shohin Noguchi and Modern Nanga

Yamanashi Prefectural Museum of Art
Finished

Artists

Shohin Noguchi
This exhibition will display 70 works by Shohin Noguchi (1847-1917), alongside 40 works by 20 other Nanga artists, dating from the late Edo Shogunate to the Taisho Period.
Noguchi was a leading female artist of “Nanga”, a style of painting originally derived from the Southern Song dynasty in China. Born in Osaka, she wedded to a sake brewery in Kofu, and subsequently appeared in many exhibitions in Tokyo. She also taught at the Peeress' School (currently Gakushuin Women’s College), and received many commissions from the royal family.
In this show, we hope to present an overview of modern Nanga in Japan, while emphasizing Noguchi’s role in its development.
