Hans Bellmer (1902-1975) is an artist well-know for his unique ball-jointed dolls, however he has also left numerous collections of excellent photos. Such collections like his "La Poupée" (doll) and his "Unica" series will be on display in this exhibition.
"La Poupée" features photos of a doll (made in 1935) placed indoors and outdoors, taken with thorough consideration of composition, props, and illumination. At times, the doll appears as an objet d'art, at times as a mysterious living thing, and at times it appears as a corpse hacked up and disposed of. An ordinary scene of a kitchen or a bedroom becomes surreal when the doll, which itself is a perfect work in itself, is placed in those well thought-out settings. "Unica" is a series of bondage photos of a naked female, Unica Zürn, whom Bellmer met in his 50's. No show of emotion nor sexuality, as seen in Japanese bondage works, is presented in this series. Instead, his intention is to create figurative art using the female body as merely an object.
30 photos reproduced from original negative films from 1983 will be on display.
