For the past couple of years, Shoko Matsuyama has been re-drawing various advertising and fashion magazine visuals from her own distinct point of view. But, as this exhibition aims to prove, she has broken out of the limitations of the canvas, utilizing a wide array of media such as the silk screen, paintings, and video. This broadened perspective on the support medium is a direct consequence of the artist's desire to be uniquely free.
Matsuyama's work is nothing more than the direct act of rethinking and adding meaning to images around us, or on the contrary stripping those images of their respective meanings. Destruction and reassembly of meaning, denial or affirmation of superficiality and materialism; these contradictory elements are the main themes of her somewhat elusive oeuvre. Presenting that dynamic and multifaceted alchemy in an overall manner and, at the same time, somehow incubating it within the gallery space is what this exhibition is all about.
