Masaki Suematsu
Masaki Suematsu (1908-1997) was born in Shibata City, Niigata. After completing high school education in Japan, he became interested in the Neuer Tanz, German new dance, and went to Europe in 1939. The WWII began while he was in France, and he was detained in Perpignan near the French-Spanish border in 1944. During the internment, he created a few hundred sketches and became involved in abstract painting.
After returning to Japan in March 1946, he actively exhibited paintings at the Free Artist Association and the Shutai Art Association. While participating in international exhibitions enthusiastically, he talked about the Paris art scene at lectures, interviews and magazines from the experience he had through the direct relationship with many artists in wartime France. From 1953, he taught the creative process and European aesthetics as a professor at the Tama Art University.
This exhibition explores the birth and activities of painter Masaki Suematsu through 30 oil paintings, 50 sketches from the Perpignan period and other materials.
