Graffiti started in New York in the 1970s by scribbling pictures on walls and trains with spray paint and permanent pens. In the 80s, parts of the graffiti phenomenon came to be considered as an art form thanks to the efforts of Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring.
In Japan too, graffiti has been evolving in its own right.
Is graffiti an art? Or is it a crime? This has always been a controversial issue, and this exhibition is a good opportunity to make your own opinion. You will surely become more aware of the numerous pieces of artwork that can be seen all around Tokyo.
