Michael Kenna
The world's most important landscape photographer, Michael Kenna, was born in 1953 and raised in the industrial area of Lancashire, in northern England. After studying at the London School of Art, in 1976 he obtained his Higher National Diploma in Photography. In 1977 he went to America where he started work as a photographer, and remains there today. Kenna's photographs consist primarily of black and white landscapes taken at dawn and sunset and are made using regular, traditional techniques. However, his works are mysterious and give the illusion of a spatial dimension removed from reality, while also overflowing with classical and romantic lyricism. Depicting the subtle changes of light and atmosphere, the grain and tones of his photographs recall the traditional landscape painting of England. His distinctive aesthetic awareness and use of superb print techniques underpin the "spirituality" of his work, and have received critical acclaim all over the world.
This exhibition is composed of approximately 150 black and white landscape works taken every year in Japan since 2001, conveying the sense of spirituality that Michael Kenna has felt everywhere from Hokkaido to Okinawa.
