Hidekazu Tanaka

Having spent time making drawings and wall paintings in a relatively strong, improvisational style, Tanaka is now working with oil and acrylic paint on canvas; the vivid sense of movement in his use of lines and colour in his compositions has opened a new realm of consciousness and feeling in his work.

Tanaka does not make his paintings by giving in to the comfortable emotional qualities of allowing the brush to move freely, in fact he consciously disrupts the flow of the brush, and by filling the painting with overbearing changes, he transcribes his imagination onto the canvas. Through the friction created by the repeated suppression of his emotions and desires Tanaka creates a composition of friction: an impulsive rhythm of lines and colours but at the same time controlled.

In this exhibition of his new work, Tanaka is setting up an installation of his paintings that contain 'time' as a key element. One can understand Tanaka approach to 'time' as the nuance of all people's individual timelines. By creating a sense of friction between the time that viewers perceive in the work and the time that viewers perceive in themselves, Tanaka aims to lead them to a point where of activated emotion that he describes as "a gentle awakening through colour". In the way that there is a paradox between a donut being perceived as a hole or as a wheel, Tanaka uses time as an experiment in developing a relationship between the viewer and his work that has a sense of duality about it.
