This is a retrospective exhibition of Hiroshi Teshigahara (1927-2001) who worked in various media from film, ceramic, calligraphy, landscape architecture, to installation using bamboo. He was born in the year his father, the artist Sofu established the Sogetsu movement. Having studied Nihonga painting, after the war he joined the avant garde art movement "Seiki". He moved into the field of film thereafter and in 1953 he produced his first work "Hokusai", and in 1964, he made a film adaptation of Kobo Abe's novel "Woman of the Dunes", which won a special prize at the Cannes Film Festival, and earned him international recognition. Meanwhile, as the director of the Sogetsu Center he has overseen the production of contemporary music, jazz, modern dance and experimental film projects both within Japan and abroad. Moving on to work in ceramic, he opened a ceramics studio in Fukui Prefecture in 1972. This exhibition takes an extensive retrospective look at his career.
