Helmut Schmid received the most prestigious and innovative education of the time in Switzerland in the 1960s, when the basic theory of typography was being developed. After working in several countries he established himself as a designer and typographer in Osaka, from where he continues to exert significant influence worldwide.
He has also been involved in researching the recent history of typography in a collaborative project between professors and students in the Design Department of the Fachhochschule Düsseldorf (University of Applied Sciences). The “schmid today” research project on Schmid himself has been underway since 2003, and with its results over the three years having been made available both as a book and as the “Design is Attitude” exhibition, a digital media archive of his work has been formed. The exhibition has toured Korea, Switzerland, and Germany, and has been well received in each of those countries.
This exhibition adds representative works by Schmid to the original exhibition to offer a complete picture of his design activities.
