Toshi Shimizu
This exhibition will display all 120 works from the museum collection by Toshi Shimizu. Works by his colleagues, Tamotsu Tanaka, Eitaro Ishigaki, and John Sloane will also be on display.

Toshi Shimizu (born 1887) studied art in Seattle and New York under John Sloane, where he received a lot of praise for his paintings depicting the life of the common man with a humorous touch. In 1924, he and his family moved to Paris, where he encountered Cubism. They returned to Japan in 1927, and Shimizu joined in the establishment of the Independent Art Association, of which he became a principal member. He traveled China and South East Asia, drawing people and landscapes, and recording the strategies of the Japanese Imperial Army. Shimizu passed away in 1845.
