"Rittai (3D) Art" as a form of creative expression whose materials and techniques are rooted in the context of Japanese craft has already been in development for a long time. In particular, the genre of textile dying that started searching for an identity since the 1970s after becoming intermingled with various genres of expression in the 1960s, has created an internationally acclaimed genre of "fiberwork" that encompasses a broad range of works. In Japan, most textile artists are based in Kansai. In Kanto on the other hand, the field of metal sculpture has also produced unique artists with a clear point of view beginning in the late 1970s. A common thread among these fields whether it is dyes, textiles, copper or iron, is the idea of heightened consciousness of the manufacturing process and the structure of the work itself since the process involves creating 3D forms out of shapeless materials. This exhibition features such works by 8 Japanese artists that lead this movement of exploring modern sculptural expression.
