Kazuo Oga has worked as an art director for animations creating background scenery for a number of pieces. His first art direction for a feature film was "My Neighbor Totoro" (1988) by Studio Ghibli, in which he successfully visualized the clear and vivid natural scenes of the 1950s. After that, he continuously contributed to Ghibli on features such as "Only Yesterday", "Pompoko" and "Princess Mononoke", creating beautiful scenery that supports the story and characters.
With his detailed observation and his outstanding skills in achieving both detail and expression, he created magnificent scenes of nature that are accessible to anyone.
This exhibition has been organized with the support of Studio Ghibli and the Ghibli Museum in Mitaka, and features more than 600 works of background scenery, with many of them on public view for the first time. This is a retrospective exhibition that including Oga's early works before Ghibli as well as his other illustration works.
