Ota Memorial Museum of Art
Finished

Artists

Hiroshige Utagawa
Shodai Hiroshige Utagawa (Hiroshige Utagawa I) created a number of masterpieces, including the "50 Views of Tokaido" series, before he passed away in 1858 at the age of 62. Ota Memorial Museum of Art has a wonderful collection of hand-painted drawings (Nikuhitsu-ga) by Hiroshige. In commemoration of the 150th anniversary of his death, this exhibition presents a large number of Nikuhitsu-ga by Shodai Hiroshige, and about 60 rare Nikuhitsu-ga by Hiroshige II-IV.

Works on display include paintings that are on view for the first time to the public, a few of which were painted by Hiroshige at the age of 10. In addition, Hiroshige's 40 famous prints from the series, "50 Views of Tokaido," and "Meisho Edo Hyakkei," and related documents and artifacts are presented to give an overview of Hiroshige's practice.
